RED PLANET TO BECOME FIRST BUDGET HOTEL CHAIN FREE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC
BANGKOK – As part of its environmental sustainability goals, Red Planet Hotels announced today that all its hotels will phase out single-use plastics. The first-of-its-kind initiative in the budget hotel segment tops the company’s ongoing green programmes across all its properties, including waste management, energy conservation, and responsible procurement.
Red Planet Hotels is committed to becoming 100 per cent single-use plastic-free in all hotel operations as its contribution to arresting the disposal of eight million tonnes of plastic ending up in oceans every year. This year, the company removed all plastic straws, cutlery, cups, and lids from its coffee bars. Red Planet hotels uses only refillable bathroom amenities, and it has recently eliminated all in-room single-use plastics across its South East Asian hotels. The company has further expanded its supplier partnerships with Rethink Plastic in Indonesia and EcoKoala in Thailand to offer additional eco-friendly alternatives to in-room amenities.
Today, the brand’s hotels in Thailand and Japan have switched from selling plastic bottles to recycled glass bottles, thereby reducing the burden on landfills and ultimately saving coastlines and beaches from continually accumulating everlasting garbage. Red Planet Hotels will extend the initiative to all its properties in the Philippines and Indonesia, making the move from plastic water bottles to either plastic-free alternatives or easily accessible water dispensers — a programme the company implements to offset the one million plastic bottles sold every minute.

Through avoiding single-use plastics altogether, and working with suppliers to ensure adequate recycling processes are in place, Red Planet Hotels seeks to ensure that it generates less waste and refuse such that zero plastic ends up in oceans or landfills.
