BANGKOK – From 2-8 December 2019, in celebration of its first Environmental Week, Red Planet Hotels across Asia joined hands with local communities to reduce waste, restore mangrove forests, and increase awareness of protecting the environment. To date, the company has already rolled out sustainability endeavours with more than 5,000 participants in the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan.
During the seven day period, more than 530 volunteers came together for a series of events ranging from cleaning up city streets, parks, and canals to planting new crops at an urban farm. The initiative removed more than 1,100 kilograms of rubbish from the city centres, planted over 1,200 new plants, vegetables, and trees, and encouraged car-free commutes. Red Planet plans to host several volunteer activities every year, which will continue to support community-based organisations and reduce the environmental impact of tourism.
"Eco-friendliness is a defining concern for budget hotel guests, so they feel the same profound responsibility as we do to conserve the environment," said Tim Hansing, CEO of Red Planet Hotels. "By providing an opportunity for our guests and communities to join us in green activities outside our hotels, we are better equipped than ever to have a long-lasting, positive impact on our planet."
In Indonesia, volunteers educated local schools on the harmful effects of plastic pollution, planted over 100 new mangrove trees, and cleaned up several streets and a jogging track while providing clean water in plastic-free containers.
As part of environmental actions in Thailand, participants removed trash from urban areas, planted new mangrove forests in Hat Yai and Bangkok, and collected and delivered plastic bottles to a local university recycling programme in Pattaya.
Red Planet Hotels in the Philippines cleaned up the vicinity of the hotels while encouraging passers-by to take part and embrace eco-friendly behaviour. The company also donated all cleaning materials, including broomsticks, dustpans, and recycled bin bags to a local green committee. In addition, the Environmental Week participants planted more than 600 saplings at an urban farm and replanted mangrove forests in Cebu to restore land to its natural state in the wake of deforestation for a new port.
